How often should smoke alarms be tested in rental properties?

During a tenancy, the renter must test and clean each smoke alarm in the home, at least once every 12 months.In addition to this it is the responsibility of the landlord to ensure smoke alarms are cleaned and tested within 30 days prior to the new lease start date or lease renewal date.
